Why do I have to wait ten minutes for the walk signal at the intersection of Beach Boulevard (8 lane thoroughfare) and MacDonald Drive in Huntington Beach, Orange County, California? I??m waiting, cars are waiting on both side legs, no traffic on Beach because the lights are red both ways. Weirdest damn thing. 8 minutes go by then a slug of traffic comes through, 2 minutes later the yellow FINALLY. Then the stupid thing starts flashing after we are barely into the crosswalk. It takes a while to cross 8 lanes of traffic on foot and I??m reasonably fast. People with mobility issues would be screwed.

Traffic engineering is a specialty within Civil Engineering. The electrical components do whatever the traffic guys programmed into them, unless there is a failure.
