There was a thread little while back Just A. Surveyor started relating to TV?ÿand I didn't feel much?ÿlike hijacking it, but thought I'd toss this grist for mill out and see what information I might glean from the surveyor brain trust seeing as it's mostly made up of some pretty tech savvy folks who have no qualms about showing me the errors of my ways.

While back SWMBO gave me one of those Amazon Firesticks and showed me how to program in this platform called KODI. There's a bunch of YouTube videos on the subject.?ÿAppears it's a file sharing service that allows me download and watch movies, many of them recent releases, off other's networks.?ÿWhile this is pretty cool, I haven't forgotten the fallout the came with similar music sharing platforms like Napster.

Which segues into the subject of VPN's. Virtual Private Networks, that would provide the end user with some degree of anonymity.

I'm trying to educate myself a bit on the subject and was curious if others have any experience with setting?ÿup and using these.

Any other thoughts?ÿon the subject?ÿwould be welcome.

Cheers!

Willy

I know next to nothing about VPNs, but I have friends who have a VPN set up. It allows them to do some pretty neat stuff. For example, there are some shows which are only available in certain countries which are not the US. My friends have "told" the VPN they are in Canada so they can watch a show available there but not here.

I don't think they download shows, but I got them thinking about that a bit the last time I saw them.

Edit: to your knowledge, do people also share Cable series on the Firestick?

They share next to everything from what I can tell. Once programmed with the latest version of Kodi (v17.6 I think), you're able to browse numerous other networks to see what they have available. It's actually quite mind boggling. 'Bob Unleashed' is one such provider I've checked out but there are gobs of others. The only downside is?ÿthe programming takes a few minutes to load. I've only just barely scratched the surface. I'm considering setting up a VPN just to give myself some privacy in what I choose to watch.

I use a VPN at home and on my phone and find that it gives me the security that I am looking for. On a mobile device it is very handy when connecting to open WiFi networks. From a home computer it gives you security from prying ISP's etc.

I use one called IPVanish and am really happy with it. Inexpensive and super easy to use.
