Depending on the final landing spot in Europe, assuming the world isn't really flat, the shortest line might be slightly to the west of north I suppose.

Dunno- maybe it's a local figure of speech. We ride IN cars and trucks but ON planes, trains, boats, and horses.... or is it just American English in general?
Is it easier to drive international to Calgary than to fly to Seattle and catch the international flight from there?

It's 300 miles one way to Calgary- it saved $500 on the cost of the ticket.
