My hotmail was accessed and used to send some bot emails so hotmail has blocked my account.

There is a process to unblock your account where they send a code to your alternative address. my problem is that my alternative address hasn't been active in decades. When i signed up for hotmail back in 97/98 I had a verizon address. Well that is long gone now and I cannot change my alternative email in Hotmail because I can't SIGN IN!
Any ideas out there in beer leg land??

thanks,
Don

Was it caused by a weak password, or is there a security vulnerability in hotmail?

Dunno...my password tests as moderately strong, but more than likely it was something stupid I did sometime, somewhere...

I can't help on how to get back into your hotmail account (I'm glad you did), but I can tell you that as soon as your friends and other people start calling you about your computer sending out junk, just go change your hotmail password. That was a tip I received from our IT guy... and it worked for me! He claims it also works for hijacked Yahoo accounts.

Glad you got things fixed.

Now please permit me to bore you with another story.

Back in the early 1990's I did an experiment. I signed up for a Hotmail account.

But, I did something tricky with the account name. The spammers have computer programs that randomly generate addresses and send email to them.

Pick a really simple address like jsmith@hotmail.com and you can bet your backside that very quickly your inbox will be full of all kinds of stuff.

I crafted an email address that was very unlikely to be randomly generated by a spam program.

I selected all the privacy levels to the highest setting possible.

I then proceeded to do nothing with the account. I didn't tell anyone about it. I didn't use it for anything. I did nothing. It's existence was a secret known only to me and Bill Gates.

I am assuming everyone knows that Microsoft owns Hotmail.

Anyway, at the end of a month, I had 47 emails from various companies. Turns out hidden deep in the bowels of all the user agreements none of us ever read was an interesting passage from good ole Bill.

In essence it said that Microsoft agreed to never ever under any circumstances share my information with anyone, ever1.

1Well, we might make an exception in cases where we think you might really want to hear from these people.

Translation, anyone with deep enough pockets can buy all your information from good ole Bill and there isn't anything you can do about it.

That is why someone said above that friends don't let friends Hotmail.

Do yourself a favor and get a different account.

Larry, that is something that I have thought for many years.

Most email services have a forwarding plan and will filter your mail into a new address. That is what I have done with my older address is to sent them to my new public account.

My business account, I try to keep survey business and associate related only.

I tried my hotmail account for the first time in well over a year, took me six attempts before I got my password right.
Last unopened email is from 2/21/2011
second is from 5/18/2009
third is from 11/19/2008

seems fairly secure from that data.

[sarcasm]My junk folder has 9 from today and I don't care to read any of them, eewwww would describe their content[/sarcasm]
