B and D each contain a four and an eight and a single nine.?ÿ The number one in B is irrelevant.

D. 489 = 15 * 4 * 8 + 9

Any of the answers are reasonable interpretations of the writing therefore they are within the Parol Evidence Rule.

The mistake made by others on this thread is thinking it is a pure math question when it is really an interpretation of the English language question.

Now, 4819 = 150 * 4 * 8 + 10 + 9, so it also contains four, eight and one nine, along with a bonus ten. One nine is not 19 because 19 is one ten and one nine, or two nines and one one, but the number still fits the answer.

Of course, too many nines can spoil the stew while eights and fours make every byte delicious.

@mathteacher

In aviation lingo One-Nine is 19.  No one says runway nineteen, it's always one nine.

You know, I think E is most correct because in the question is only words, not numerals.

@flga

489 - 9 = 480

8 * 4 = 32

480/32 = 15

So, 15 * 4 * 8 + 9 = 489

@flga

Can't formula it, but  the conclusion is clear. Women read faster because they don't have penises.
