Since we arrived home late last night I am only going to make a short post today with but a few pictures. All I can really say, at this time, is that my expectations were exceeded by AZ.
(Not counting the game on Sunday where the Cardinals whupped the Pats. Luckily I was unaware until today)
The Visitors Center has a great exhibit, just as you walk in the door, of the 1923 USGS survey team.
My camping gear didn't arrive as planned at Joe F's in Phoenix. Big Brown let me down! But I was able to convince them to overnight it to Flagstaff so we could pick it up Friday. A Ranger loaned us sleeping bags and pads so our first night we slept in the car. Friday found us driving to Flagstaff to retrieve our gear and pick up some trekking poles (GREAT suggestion Jim! Those poles are real helpers!)
We took the long way there and back and I found the GREATEST sign EVER!
You Can Get There From Here!!!!
We had just arrived coming down 89 (from the right in the picture) and were planning on taking 180 back to the camp. What this sign doesn't tell you is that the two points (78 miles one way and 79 miles the other) are still 25 miles apart 🙂
Thanks to Joe F. in Phoenix, and Jim F. in Flagstaff for your offers of help. I'm sorry it didn't work out!
More later after I get myself squared away in the office and figure out what I should be doing!
Don
Glad you found the boat - but it looks like you couldn't miss it.
Boy did I start laughing when I walked in the Visitors Center and there it was!!!
glad it all worked out for you, even though sleeping in your car the first night must have been a bit cold.
Grand Visit to the Grand Canyon>For the BeerLeg Site
My coozie travels with me...
At the Chihuahua Chill Grill in Black Canyon City (BYOB!!) Lunch stop on the way to the Canyon
At the overlook 38-00-32.30N 112-03-06.34 W last night there....with my grand canyon beer 🙂
Grand Visit to the Grand Canyon>For the BeerLeg Site
great job picking the Chihuahua Chill Grill for lunch - was that lucky or did you plan that stop? some folks might have stopped into Rock Springs for pie instead, you made a tasty choice 🙂
Grand Visit to the Grand Canyon>Joe
That was dumb luck Joe. It was far enough out of Phoenix for me and just sitting right there by the side of the road. I just picked the exit for the name of the town 🙂
Went there, talked with the owner, a nice New Hampshire boy, and he sent me to Ron's for beer.
of course the surfboard on the wall prompted some conversation !!!!
The North Rim
is, to me, the most beautiful and awe-inspiring site to which I have yet been (5 times, in all).
The North Rim
I can understand what you mean Jack. The south rim is awfully commercial but it was the perfect introduction for me.
I am looking forward to doing a cross canyon hike, North to South though....Since the north rim is 1000' higher than the south rim!!!
Have you been down and back up, or across?
The North Rim
Jack,
did you drive our to Toroweap (or Tuweap) Point? I've been wanting to experience that location after reading about it. Another location still on my Arizona to-do list.
The North Rim
The Grand canyon is awesome. Pictures just can't describe well enough.
Don:
Glad things worked out okay for you. There is a better sign than that here in town. I'll try to figure out how to post it.
