I've been contemplating seeing more than just west of the Rockies. Will be traveling on my motorcycle with trailer starting this week. I will be around the NW until about mid August, then off to see the USA. Going to the SW, then down to the Gulf and out to GA and FL. Then likely wind my way through the SE toward IL, then Route 66 back to the SW before winter hits.

I got a new wizbang netbook to stay connected and will be asking all of youze where to go and what to see and perhaps share a brew or two when I pass nearby. Expect weekly reports.

🙂

Don't know why but cannot seem to upload a pix?????????

If you don't come to the northeast then you're selling yourself short...

TP
If you happen to travel 66 through Oklahoma and want to make a side trip to the south then you would be welcome to take a day, or more, and get your bike serviced, relax in the pool, eat BBQ and rest your weary tailbone while on your trip at my house. I have a fully appointed garage (Cable-Refrigerator-Music) and all the tools one could possibly need. It's my man cave of sorts. You can park the bike inside and the garage is the one place where a good cigar is allowed.

We have a fine Harley shop as well as one of the better Yamaha-Honda shops in the area depending on what you ride.

And there is some great riding just north in the Wichita Mountains where you will mingle with Buffalo, Elk, Deer and Prairie Dogs. Some good places to eat and you would have your trusty guide along on his Harley to find the hidden good places to eat.

If you are just hustling across Oklahoma on 66 then maybe I could meet you in OKC and travel across the state with you before peeling off and making my way back home.

Deral

I had an idea earlier in the summer of doing some huge cross country trip where posters could join/depart along the way. Yours would be a good trip to pick up a few straglers along the way.

I hit the upload button before, but nothing uploaded. Let's try again........

OK, That is last week at the BMWMOA International Rally in Redmond, OR. Looking over my tent with my R100RS and Bushtec trailer at the Airheads tent. The type 247 engined BMW's are known as airheads, and the support group for these machines is HUGE.

I am just apprehensive about the traffic and congestion of the NE metro areas. I would like to spend a month at the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian, MIT and the other many highlights. But negotiating DC, NY, Boston, Philly just gives me shudders. Seattle and Portland are no different. If I ride through those areas, it will be from 3:30 to 5:30AM, after the bar rush and before the commuters.

Yeah, I have heard of that. It's on the want to see, not need to do list.

Well, thanks Deral. That's right up there on the to do list. I will check with you when I am within a week or so. Before the end of Sept I would guess at this point. Would be a good opportunity to do some basic maintenance and unload and reload the trailer and likely pack a parcel of things I don't really need or have bought to send back home and lighten the load.

Next year's BMWMOA is in Pennsylvania in July. If I can plan for that then I will have more and better long range experience and might do the NE.

Great. I have a working washer and dryer also and we even got full indoor plumbing a couple of years ago.

We do not have a BMW dealer in Lawton but I think you guys are pretty self reliant from the friends that I know that ride BMW's. Crazy group as they will ride in any weather and really run up the miles. A lot tougher than me or my Harley.

Traffic won't kill you....it just slows you down. If you let traffic get to you, you'll never enjoy visiting ANY big city.

All the northeastern cities you mentioned have great transit systems. NY, Boston, Philly and Washington DC all have subways, and bus/light rail. Once you get into town, settle into your base and get transit maps....you'll be surprised how easy it is to get around, especially if you pick the right area to stay in.

A hint: the 3:30 AM to 5:30 AM thing may not work in large cities, as many do their maintenance, repaving, lane closures etc., in the overnight period. Internet check will help.

Here in NYC, the Cross Bronx and the BQE are ALWAYS jammed, no matter what time of day.

For sure. I met one guy from FL who rode his R27, 500cc single, all the way out here and back. Now that is tough. He essentially tucked up close behind a buddy on a bigger Frankenbemmer and got towed by the vacuum in the wind stream. Lots of people from FL, VT, Alaska. One guy rode across Australia, then shipped to east coast, then did a walkabout across America to make this rally.

That is WHY I avoid metro areas. Small town Ma&Pa is much more to my liking.

Tim,

Sorry to have missed you in Redmond, I feel a bit lame not even being able to make the 20 minute drive, yes I have good excuses, but they are just that excuses, was gone the first part of your visit, then I had two projects to get finished about 1.5-2 hours away, so put in some real long days getting those finished up. These projects were in the vicinity of the Cascade Lakes Highway, saw a ton of BMW bikes making that loop while out there, if you made that day tour, you might of gone right by me, LOL. This week would be no problem, I guess that is how it goes sometimes.

You are embarking on the type of trip I would like to take, I look forward to the reports AND PLEASE stay safe and enjoy your adventure.

SHG
