The birds-eye view in Google Earth is great. All those square paddocks and circular irrigation.
And man is it ever flat.
The street view sort of reminds me of Rakaia here in NZ.
My wife claims Bird City as her hometown as that is where she attended school and church. The area close to Bird City is rather flat. Those center-pivot irrigated fields are mostly filling out a quarter section of land (1/2 mile by 1/2 mile) So you can gauge mileage somewhat easily. Except for where you can see the canyon lands to the north and west of Bird City. These are known as the Arikaree Breaks and are the result of silt being blown in from the Southwestern US for hundreds of thousands of years. Where water must drain, it will. But, the soil structure is so dry that canyons are formed out of nowhere. There is a canyon not far east of my wife's home, on their land, where you could drive up with the biggest semi-trailer truck imaginable. Park it. Get a dozer and shove the thing over the edge and none of it would be visible in the general view. Annual rainfall is around 15 inches.
Wander a bit further to the northwest to find the tri-corner of Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado. Look close at Google to see the corner falls in the middle of cattle grazing land. A cow can make a short trip around the fenced monument and have been in three States.
