i have a K&E transit that has a (approximate 3") male mounting and my tripod has a 5/8" male screw down. Do they make adapters?

It would probably be best to use a shorter tightening knob or one that has a very large barrel if you are using a plumb bob.
The tripod head will need to be practically level for best results.
Fit a longer hanger on the transit that will fit thru the tube of the tightening screw.

Most tripods still come with plumb bob hooks, and I believe Seco also still makes the 5/8"x11 to 3 1/2"x8 adapters.

Someone Should Make An Adaptor With Optical Plummet

Or laser plummet.

my transi's female mounting threaded fitting measures 3" inside dimension, would this fit the 31/2" adapter?

on my transit the plumb bob hanger looks like it might unscrew. Does anyone know if it does? I hate to try and unscrew it and break something.

K&E transit base thread size

Most K&E transits manufactured after 1900 have the standard thread size. You probably do need to check prior to making a purchase. If your K&E is attached to a pot-metal plate while it is in the box, there is a chance the thread size is marked on the plate.

Otherwise you will need to determine the actual base size.
