When I was a little guy, I got this shotgun like affair that fired ping pong balls, and you could load up 3-4 in the magazine. One of my favorite toys ever!
Well, a few days before Christmas, my folks were not around and I went exploring in their closet. I found alot of stuff including that gun that shot ping pong balls. I was really excited and of course I loaded that sucker up and tried it out. I was so happy until I realized the possible ramifications of my actions (my adult words), so I unloaded the gun and rehid it in the closet.
I was in agony for several days, convinced that I was going to be found out, and spend the rest of my days in purgatory! Christmas morning rolled around and I had to put on the best surprised act of my young life.
Even though I was thrilled to get that present, it just wasn't the same as if I was really in the dark about what I was getting. In a word, I was disappointed, mostly in myself, I guess.
But that gun was really neat!
Anyone else have this experience?
One year my mom decided to do christmas boxes instead of wrapping paper, one night I sneaked into the living room and carefully removed the tape holding the lid down and spyed on my gifts. I also learned the hard way that this ruins the feeling of being a kid and getting suprised, yep, I also put on a oscar winning suprise performance christmas morning.
I told my mom about it nearly 20 years later...
When I was really a young child I woke up in the middle of the night and went down stairs and opened every present under the tree including everyone else's. Needless to say, there were a lot of surprised and very unhappy people on Christmas day.

your communists tendencies were showing at even the earliest year eh?
Not quite.
After the first 3 years with my first wife, she stopped bringing presents home that were meant for me. It seems that I have the nack of just looking, not 'inspecting', at presents and deducing what was in them. She always hid them at a friend's house.
I used to do something similar as a child, though I never did open prematurely.;-)
Actually Snoop, I think that greedy me, me, me, behavior was Capitalist Pig behavior and thank god I have gotten beyond that. 🙂
No. I never did that.
However our baby brother was notorious for opening up stuff and attempting to tape it back up. His over zealous use of tape made it quite clear what had happened.
He got busted in the act once so the folks returned most everything he was to have gotten. It left such a dark cloud over all of us that to this day (over 40 years later) I won't shake a box or even attempt a guess - not that I get anything anymore anyhow.
On Christmas day, someone passes out all the presents and we take turns opening them up, one by one. With 13 of us, it is a slow tedious process that can take a couple of hours.
I tend to *accidentally* rip some of the paper, on some of my gifts (I tend not to get to many;-) ) which tends to get piercing glares from SHMBO. Oh well, it's not like it's the first time and I'm sure it won't be the last. After 37 Christmas's, I have gotten used to it;-) , I'm not sure she has.....
Happy Holidays!

I had the uncanny ability to guess most of what I was getting just by shaking/feeling the presents. My family won't let me NEAR the presents anymore. 🙁
Wendell outsmarted me, though, a few times!!! One year he got me diamond earrings. He put them in the middle of a tube. I thought he got me a poster of some sort. Boy was I surprised to find diamonds in the middle!
Another year he hid a diamond pendant in a HUGE box filled with rocks, newspapers, etc... plus he wrapped the small box in a bigger box, and then another bigger box, etc... I had to go through 5 boxes plus rocks and newspaper to get to the REAL box!!
No presents this year, unfortunately. We've had no time and not much $$ left after this move to do shopping or decorating, plus with grandma dying 5 days before Christmas, we're both in mourning. *sniffles* We may do something after all of this chaos calms down. There's always next year.
This too will pass.
😉
I've tricked the wife a few times over the years. Did the box in a box in a box thing, the odd sized present and weird stuff in it to through her off. One year, I took a Whiskey Box, with the partitions, and wrapped all he small presents and put them in the slots, then wrapped the big box.
My Grandma passed a few weeks ago, she was 94. She lives in Manitoba Canada, so I didn't get to see much of her, but I cherish the times I did. She had Alzheimer's for about the last 15 years so that was hard to see her and not know who we were. I got to see her on her 90th birthday, that was a treat! I took all the family and we got some 5 generations pictures, too.
My Great Aunt Mary passed away on Monday, she was 99. Kind of tough on my Mom....
Have a Great Christmas!

Radar...
I always thought that if someone passed around Christmastime that they were just extra special and the Man Upstairs needed them for His last minute celebration preparations and would only choose the best!! Grandma was definitely the best!! Looking at it this way, for me, helped somewhat to ease my broken heart.
Angel...
I never thought about it that way, thanks, I'll remember that.
