I'm sure that just about everybody reading this gets contacted by personal phone or email about new job opportunities.?ÿ I often get solicitations in my personal email account, at least weekly, and politely reply that I'm not interested.?ÿ I have not posted a current resume anywhere in over 22 years.

So today, I'm sitting in my office working on my company PC and see an email come in.?ÿ Few clients have my email address and the vast majority of spam gets filtered out.?ÿ Well, I opened the email only to find out that it was a recruiter using my company email address and email server to try and lore me away for the business I own a part of.

Needless to say, I was set back and my reply was basically as follows:

"Thank for for reaching out to me and I am more than quite happy with my current situation but just want to express to you that I am completely shocked to see you use my employers email system and equipment to attempt to place me elsewhere.

Please remove my information from your prospect list.?ÿ Please also remove any email address with this company's email extension as well.

I have seriouse concern about the ethics of reaching out to a current employee on company time and using the email server of a company you are trying to take candidates from."

Does anybody else see a problem with the ethics of the above?

Replying to spam just brings more spam. Stop that. Don't feed the trolls. Furthermore, replying emotionally is chumming the water.?ÿ

They are contacting names on mailing lists. Perhaps from one of the "free" Survey magazines, perhaps from your state board. Perhaps gleaned from your company's own website. Your IT can block emails from their URL. DO that.?ÿ?ÿ

Recruiters of professional people may sometimes be overly persistent, but they are a far cry from the folks selling the extended car warranty. Recruiters want to build a network of people who might put them in contact with professionals that actually are looking for a new opportunity. They don't want to make you angry. I have no doubt that Chris's reply will result in being left alone at his office, and may even generate a relatively sincere apology.

@norman-oklahoma?ÿ

GIF

Being a part of LSAW, I get emails from Posers saying they are people involved in LSAW; asking me to buy some gift cards...

I brought this up, and was told; non-profits get hit pretty hard with this kind of crap.?ÿ

No telling how many people within the relatively small community of surveyors will get approached outside of work hours when there is a need for employees.?ÿ I've even heard tale of crews working on a project and being approached by other companies looking for people.

Most of the recruiters I've spoken to were doing what Peter Lothian says - developing contacts.?ÿ I've had some friends placed in some pretty nice positions by recruiters who contacted me as a reference provided.?ÿ After providing a reference for my friends, they would always ask if I had interest in a new position, and were always respectful of my desire to not be listed with them for contact along those lines.

They might be useful if you needed to find some help in the future.

@peter-lothian I got that reply last night, a simple "understood and noted."

@jon-payne it's not the case of being contacted after hours, this was on company time through the company email system, the same company that I own a part of.?ÿ This was no instance like the usual when they contact me by email and they ask that if I am not interested, do Iknow anybody who may be?

In older days I had the same recruiter place me twice and when I founded my department, I contacted him and he found some talent for me, as well as some who seemed promising but didn't make the cut.?ÿ He got his 20% on the ones who lasted and nothing for the ones that couldn't make the cut.?ÿ I'm OK with that.

If I responded to every recruitment email I would do little else. I just delete them and move on.
