That's the kind of thing that can permanently scar a person. They are incredibly lucky that they had a cellphone that actually had service where they were. We have huge areas where they simply do not work no matter what cellular company you use.

This story reminds me of a cartoon I saw in a magazine about 15 years ago (pre-GPS machine control). It was a "veteran" surveyor with a rookie. The rookie asked "What do I do if I get lost in the woods". The veteran said "See those stakes in your hand. Pound one in the ground and when the dozer operator comes to rip it out, catch a ride back with him"
