I didn't want to hijack Perry's excellent post and photos of the Jerry Jam in NH below.
A question, though:
Bob Dylan at Newport in 1965 - would you have cheered or booed?

Don

O.K. Edit, IF you had been born 🙂

I was at Newport in 1965. I saw a lot of people, many unknowns at the time but they were all good, the crowds loved everyone. Back then the festival lasted an entire week with multiple concerts and workshops every day. The guy who really stands out in my memory is Lighting Hopkins, boy could he make a guitar talk. Today I guess is would be more blues than folk but it was very good - long long ago and far away.

Wow! That is really neat, Tom. I was not there. I had just gotten out of High School and was working for the summer at a hotel on Mackinac Island. What I was questioning was the "electrification." I've heard that there were very mixed reactions.

Don:

I don't remember any comments about electrification, just glad to be there.

Back in "65" we all had other events on our minds like the draft which hit home several months latter. I guess you have to order your priorities.

I do wish I had save the program.

I went to an Arlo Guthrie concert (he lives in our area) a few years ago and a guy had a very old poster of Arlo from way back when he first started out, way cool. The guy showed the poster around in the break area during intermission, I guess he was hoping he could get Arlo to sign it.

Memories!

Bob was in town a few weeks ago in concert with Leon Russell at N.O Lakefront arena. I saw him there about 9+ years ago.
I believe Arlo was at Jazz fest this year.

I was at Newport Jazz fest in 1968.I met friends on the slope outside the fence. stage right
This was the infamous fest when the National Guard arrived in the night and formed flank and a battle line with the folks on the slope. It was quite surreal.
We tried to crash the military base to sleep under some trees but were herded out early in the a.m. I ended up sleeping on a chaise lounge at some motel by the pool.
One of the odd things that happened was that a friend of mine and I decided to hitch up there on the spur of the moment. We walked over to RT 46 in North Jersey and presented the thumb. A van immediately stopped and we got in. They asked us where we were going and said Newport R.I. They said that was where they were going also. They were from VA.

As for Don's ?. No.
Dylan was at the age when he should have been changing syles and broadening his song writing chops. I really liked the Ballad of a Thin Man tune and can't imagine it folksy.
I saw Bonnie Raitt in the 60's when she was considerd a 'folk' artist. I am glad she changed also.

Thank you, Tom and Robert

I am, once again, amazed by the depth of non-survey related life experience, knowledge and opinion that is available here for all of us to share and benefit from.
What a resource, what a treat!

I wasn't there, but I when I first heard his electric stuff, I thought it was great. I guess that means I would have cheered.
