I think that my wife must have put all of my summer shorts in the dryer, 'cause today not a single pair that I tried would button.

I don't have that problem with my 'summer kilt' with the beaver castor impregnated emu fur lining. 😉

Sounds to me like you have a misclosure. Those buttons and holes are supposed to line up. I know when you first buy them at the store they line up. Maybe they are just out of calibration. I know I have some pants that happened to. Out of calibration.
