A cousin of mine, a teenager, lost her life while texting and driving. A member of the family created a Toyota Racing Sponsifier design and I hope you'll place your vote for it. If it becomes one of the winning designs, it will be painted on an actual NASCAR race car and raced.
Done.
Here’s a sad story about an Iowa teen who was killed in a texting-related crash on July 5th. A new state law banning texting for everyone and any cell phone use by drivers under 18 went into effect on July 1. This girl wasn’t wearing a seat belt either.
Got my vote. Someone sent me a series of photos of a truly gruesome accident that happened while the driver was texting. He hit a semi head-on.
ALL PHONES SHOULD BE TURNED OFF WHILE DRIVING ! ! ! ! !
THEY ARE KILLERS.
even with "hands free" devices, your attention is taken away from your driving no matter what you think.

After having just done a 3000 mile trip out to the west coast then I never found a place that I could not pull off to text or call back someone. I had a tech call or two from Michael, my partner in Lawton, and just found a convenient place to pull over and return his call. I put my phone on vibrate while driving so I will feel that I have a call and I will return it when it is safe for me and the others on the road.
No text is as important as your life or the life of others.

you got it, so sorry for your loss. I'll be driving with my son to NC Saturday, and you can be sure I won't be texting or surfing the web.

I see young women doing it all the time. I don't see an end to it until someone invents an automatic shutoff of texting when a car is in motion in excess of walking speeds. With GPS in just about all phones it seems to me it would be a pretty simple enhancement.

Except that would also disable the passenger's phone.

Sorry to hear that, Wendell.
A local trooper was killed when her patrol car crossed the CL. The scuttlebutt is her cell phone was found at her feet with an open text message. Officially no acknowledgment. In fact they tried to ticket the poor schmo she hit.
What gets me is, she worked at two local schools and was well liked. Imagine the impact her tragic death could have upon the student drivers.
Seems a waste to me.

Okay. Don't allow the phone to operate other than indicating that there is a call waiting. If there is an emergency the driver call pull over and call 911.
Here is a picture & memorial of Wendell's cousin. The one who was killed. I believe the mom posted the story on the video.
The grandma was here visiting with us last September. My daughter and her friend were here and the grandma asked us to all sit down, she wanted to show us something. She then proceeded to show us the pics of the wreck and told us the story. She wanted to get it through my daughters thick skull to NEVER ever text and drive. I was in tears listening to her describe the phone call she got that her grand daughter was dead; it is one thing to hear stories like this but when it is personally right in front of you it is even more heart breaking. :u:
Oregon just passed the no texting or talking on cell phone while driving. People don't seem to pay attention to it, though, because I still see idiots texting while driving around here. *sigh*
Sorry about your cousin.
I don't text. Takes care of that problem for me.

Sorry to hear that, Wendell.
Here in SOZ it is an offense to answer a phone in a motor vehicle while driving. Unless full voice recognition to operate the phone it is still an offense to touch green button with phone in a cradle.
About $300 on spot fine plus 3 demerit points.(can lose 12 over 3 years) after 3 years from gaining points they drop off. Lose 12 and lose license for 3/6 months.

Yeah, very sad Rich. That story was carried in the Omaha media in relation to our new "Don't Text and Drive" law. Ours goes into affect tomorrow as a secondary offense worth 3 points and $100. Is yours a primary offense like your seat belt law?
I wish they'd do that here; it would save many lives.

While I agree on one level, on another I do not.
We are not yet a Nanny state such as most of Europe and the British Commonwealth have become. May we never become such.

Sorry, I read that one too fast and missed the passenger part. I would say that the trade off would be worth it. I would also submit that someone wiser than me could come up with a "work around" that would enable passengers to operate a phone under certain conditions that ensure that they weren't driving.
Just a reminder that you can vote everyday! Thanks 🙂
