Very interesting movie, especially if you like lots of blood splattering everywhere. The only connection to the 1966 movie, Django, is the cameo appearance by Franco Nero, the original Django, having a chat with Jamie Foxx in a saloon.
There are plenty of "name" actors in bit roles throughout the movie. Fun to try to figure out who that familiar face is that you can't quite name in an instant. The kinda, sorta spoof of the original KKK is hilarious, especially because Don Johnson can't see through the tiny eyeholes in the sack over his head. Someone had fun creating the name of the plantation owned by the head bad guy, Leonardo Dicaprio, whose last name in the movie is Candie. The plantation is called Candie Land. One cast member's movie name is Son of a Gunfighter, while his real life daughter has the role of Daughter of Son of a Gunfighter.
It's 165 minutes of entertainment. Go easy on the soda.

I didn't care for it, either. In typical Tarantino fashion, the blood and guts are presented in a cartoonish manner, which defeats any attempt at delivering a credible message about the American experiment with slavery (if, in fact, there was a point to the film beyond seeing how many bloody bullet impacts can be depicted per minute).
To paraphrase the old joke about Catskills resort food, it wasn't a good movie, but at least it was long.
Is that like the credible message and accurate history of Inglourious Basterds?
I'm looking forward to it. 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

We saw Life of Pi on Xmas day. It was pretty awesome. It was my first 3D movie and was very well done. The 3D was used as an accent more than a feature. Very effective.

I read the book years ago and I liked it. I look forward to the film but do not expect it to compare with the book.
When I read the book, I got PBs for some of my nieces and nephews who readit and they liked it too.
I saw that it is on some required H.S. reading list in the past few years.
The unexpected twist of the tale was done nicely in the book. It just sucked the reader into another frame of mind.
It was the writer's first novel and he really had a story to tell.
We don't get to see many current releases in theaters..maybe one or two a year.
Our little family holiday at home movie filming was
"The Odd Life of Timothy Green". An innocuous Disney Film that we enjoyed. It got bad reviews but we liked it.
Interesting thing that I saw about it was that it was developed for screen by Ahmet Zappa. Frank Zappa's smart son. It seems that he thinks up stories for movies these days. I am a sucker for 'magical realism' and it was a nice presentation of that genre.

as for Tarantino films, I am not a fan. Resevoir Dogs creeped me out with the violence and Pulp Fiction was just to hip to me.

I really enjoyed Timothy Green's story. Expecially enjoyed the twist on scoring the winning point.

As well as Wyoming and California. The scenes amid the rocks were shot in the Alabama Hills near the foot of Mount Whitney, and the dynamite scene (as well as some others) were filmed in classic California oak woodland.
grassy California Oak Woodlands have starred in a lot of western movies and TV shows.
The big studios had ranches in Southern California they used for shooting movies. The Paramount Ranch (I think that's the one) is now Malibu Creek State Park. Mr. Blanding's Dream House is now the Park headquarters and the MASH set is there too.
I must admit that when I first heard of the movie I got all excited about the movie of one of the best guitar players who ever lived. The I learned it wasn't about real-life at all. A real let down. I hate it when they rob the famous name of an authentic historical character only to pollute it with Hollywoodism. Anyway, check out the real Django on Pandora if you like, maybe even Wikipedia. Very interesting character!!
