I really like my big Brother printer for my work. I also like the cheap ink replacements. My daughter is looking for a small printer to take to college next year. Which Brother model should she get?

Maybe this ? (a little pricey up front but I like the ink concept);

Epson Expression ET-2550 EcoTank Wireless Color All-in-One Supertank Printer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01122JE56/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_awd_T4EywbG53Y6GC

I use a Brother HL-2240 laser printer. If you don't need color, it's hard to beat for economy and good results. It cost under $100 a few years ago.

With the Brother laser printers, you need to do a couple tricks to use up the toner in the cartridge. They go out of their way to be sure you never try to print without plenty of toner. [sarcasm]Thinking of your quality, of cour$e.[/sarcasm]

When it starts nagging about low toner, take out the cartridge and locate the optical sensor. Put a piece of black electrical tape over the sensor to shut it off.

Then when it tells you that it has run out (based solely on sheet count), take the toner cartridge out, get a screwdriver and take off the white plastic gear/cam. Put it back on pointing to #1 and reassemble. Now you can print at least another ream before the print starts to get faint. Take the cartridge out and shake the powder down to the roller side, and you can get quite a few more draft pages out of it.

I got a brother for my daughter this year, I think it was a L2740, which is a laser printer. She is a law student, and prints out a LOT of stuff, all B/W. I got the same model for the family computer, and I have been happy with it. Unless she needs color, I would definitely recommend a laser over an ink jet.
