Does anyone know how the seal works. Were it me I would use the pressure in the well to pressurize an inflatable seal by having a larger area exposed to a piston on the well side with a smaller area on that same piston exposed to a fluid in the seal itself. The control valve for the escaping oil would be a separate device.

Let's hope it doesn't blow out between now and when the relief wells are in place.
Still a lot of cleanup ahead.
Still a whole lot of hard work ahead.
But hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Hope the relief well doesn't cause another blow-out.
It might be a good idea to have a relief well in place for each and every deep water rig. That way if one has a catastrophe again the relief well could be immediately deployed.
