Itƒ??s going on 9 years since Youngest File took her last market animal to the fair. This spring, Adopted File is old enough, and probably emotionally ready to give it a run. Heƒ??s pretty excited, but sale day is going to be hard on him. We picked up a buddy pig also, so bacon is in my future..

@paden-cash that is Moca- 1st option to go to the sale...the other is marshmallow the buddy pig. They are both hamp- York cross via AI due to the hassle of moving a boar around last fall.

Good for you.?ÿ 4-H provides a plethora of learning opportunities in a non-school manner while providing a tremendous parent-child bonding experience.

While in college it seemed every major required the student to take Speech I.?ÿ It was easy to tell which students had been active in 4-H and which had not.?ÿ Watching an otherwise brilliant student do everything short of peeing themselves because they had to stand before 25 fellow students and deliver an important message they had prepared on their own.?ÿ By the time I turned 9 I had made several project talks and demonstrations to my fellow 4-H members and their parents and younger siblings.?ÿ Speech I was the easiest class I had in college.

When I was 9 I had no idea that 40 years later I would be judging Project Talks and Demonstrations at the State Fair.?ÿ That was really fun.?ÿ One young man did a fantastic job with his Demonstration.?ÿ The process included having me decide on the ribbon to be awarded then have a short private discussion with the presenter.?ÿ This fellow had a distinctive last name and was from a location nearly 300 miles from my home.?ÿ I asked, "By chance is your father's name, Greg?"?ÿ That blew him away and said I was correct.?ÿ I told him that his father had been three years behind me in our major and I had helped teach one of his classes on occasion.?ÿ He was a great student and a true leader.?ÿ I told him that it was evident his father had passed those traits along to his son.

@rankin_file

Had a neighbor whose kids were active with FFA and raised hogs.?ÿ I remember the first two he named "sausage" and "pork chops" just so the kids would understand the process and what awaited their "pet" project.?ÿ 😉

Absolutely, any of the kids that went through 4H around here actually make eye contact with you when speaking. A great program
