Any recommendations on brand/type?

I usually use the asphalt patch from Home Depot or Lowes and its always so messy and it dries out quickly in the back of my truck. Does anyone know of another patch product that works well for them?

I am very careful to keep clean and separated any asphalt I remove to recover or set a monument. I back fill the hole and when filled to just above the bottom of the existing asphalt layer I start using the asphalt removed from the hole, compacted with a hammer the result is a seal made of original material. Just making a patch I would do something else or would need to use something else if the ground was to cold to work the asphalt with a hammer. That method does not take much more time than other ways, just a little effort in preserving what you have for later use.

When ever I'm on a job site with a pile of cold patch, I ask the contractor if I can have some. I keep a bucket, with a lid on it, in the van and fill it up when ever I can. Has worked for me for many years.

I second that. Check with your local public works department, they would probably be glad to have you patch the holes you are creating! 😉
