My third grade son asked for help on his math homework today. The problem was" can you connect all nine of the following dots with just four line segments, do not lift the pencil from the paper or retrace any line segments. Note: the dots form more of a square in the homework problem but cannot seem to make it post that way, and it does not really matter anyway.:-)

An old one but still fun
start at the bottom left corner draw a line straight up continuing one dot past the top one.
draw down and right diagonally through the top middle dot and the right middle dot and continue until you are a dot right of the puzzle and on the bottom line
go left until you get to your start point
go right and up diagonally through the middle and top right dots
Make sure he remembers the process as it will come up in the next several grades as well.

That is it. Had me stumped, but he worked it out.
OK guys, show me how to do this little ditty at the Cracker Barrel.
yellow makes the first move
Before my cousin was in elementary school,
he could do that one with no problem. I was about 5-6 years older and could not figure it out.
I still can not do that one.

Solution- NEVER EVER GO TO CRACKER BARREL.... problem solved.:-)
There is a very old English riddle that involves a forking river and numerous bridges with a set of conditions that also requires the solver to go "outside the box" to come up with a soluton. As I recall, the trick is to go around the headlands of the river to get to the other side without using a bridge.
