I wasn't able to figure it out a while back when I was setting up one of my computers and just gave up on it. It would be nice to be able to do what you suggest.

Yes

Put a shortcut icon on the desktop.

Right click it and hit PROPERTIES

There is a START IN box, type in D:DATA.

I do this with my CAD icons for every project, that way I'm always where I want to be.

RADU:

Try Quick Launch. Drill to the folder that you want, but do not open it. Right click the folder and then left click "Send to desktop (create desktop shortcut)"; you can later delete the shotcut if you want.

Drag and drop the shotcut icon to the Quick Launch area of the task bar, that area immediately right of the window's start button. Be sure that the "Show Quick Launch" box is checked on the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box (choose "Properties" from right click of Taskbar).

You can build 1 button clicks to directly open any file, folder, program. Helpful for those in constant use.

Hope this helps.

You can change the properties from C:WINDOWSexplorer.exe to C:WINDOWSexplorer.exe "D:data" for the drop down on the start menu, or where ever you what it to be. The "D:data" is the key.

And a sort of related Q

Is there a way to get to the old file Search Companion in XP (the puppy dog icon) without going through the one that wants to index everything? I have to right click in file explorer, pick Search, scroll down to the old search, and let it open a new window.

It is mildly annoying in XP that if I don't specify the folder it comes up with folder view in the left pane, but if I add the "D:Data" or equivalent then it does not show the folder tree to the left.
