Do you know Hopper's work? One thing that stuck out when I went to the exhibit in Boston was that in his city scenes he would show utility poles but not the lines between them... very peculiar to see, the missing lines took on a life of their own.

Yes, I know Edward Hopper's work fairly well. If you were looking at a watercolor that he painted, it makes perfect sense that he would have omitted the actual conductors from the power lines. The rest of his paintings weren't typically rendered in that level of detail, so the poles were a sufficient notation of what was there.
I saw a retrospective of his work about ten years ago. One thing that struck me about it was how he worked on some of the same material, gradually developing it throughout his working life, an interior personality unfolding.
