Funny story involving math.....

I was doing an environmental gas infrastructure project around a wind farm in NE Colorado. Stuck in the truck due to lightning, I sat there and made a few estimates on the height of the tower based on the width i measured at the base, and presumed a length for the blades, and timed a rotation from the plane of the centerline of the tower.?ÿ I calculated north of 230mph at the tips, and if I was to actually have the true length i could get the exact speed( at the point in time i observed, yes i know they change speed).

I also observed exactly zero dead birds around more than 100 towers in the 2 weeks i was there.?ÿ Birds aren't that stupid, anything moving is a huge avoidance to them, and they see everything as thats the highest function their little brains can muster.?ÿ ( im a biologist in a former life, wish i would have started in survey first...)

Oh lets not go down that rabbit hole.....or lets!?ÿ The winds and the effect from the coriolis effect be damned, what about the minute and slow escape of our atmosphere into space?????!!?ÿ Eventually, we'll have no wind, no air, no people?ÿ or birds.?ÿ Although because Space X we will have escaped the confines of this shabby used planet and be zipping along through space at Warp 9.?ÿ

Totally being cheeky, well, except for the Warp 9.?ÿ Thats just silly.?ÿ 😉

shabby planet

The reality is that we are trapped here, and need to make the best of it.?ÿ You can't go anywhere outside the solar system in a lifetime, using any technology we can foresee.?ÿ

Luna, Mars, Jovian moons, etc. are very inhospitable.?ÿ With determination and boldness we can inhabit those, but it will be a struggle with lots of risks and disasters and not a pleasant life there. Even as worn-out as we are making Earth, it is still paradise compared to the alternatives.

@williwaw

A couple of years back I laid out about 50 miles of desert tortoise fence as part of mitigation for a large solar project in SoCal.?ÿ Instead of individual solar voltaic panels, this farm utilized parabolic mirrors aimed at a single tower to super heat water for used in steam generated electricity.?ÿ Apparently they occasionally had 'flammers', birds that would fly through the beams of concentrated light and ignite.?ÿ Think ants under a magnifying glass.

Yep. There's a world of uncertainty in science. Consider this: https://www.forbes.com/sites/startswithabang/2020/02/08/ask-ethan-will-the-earth-eventually-be-swallowed-by-the-sun/?sh=1e9030a15cb0

The people who get us to Warp 9 probably haven't been born yet, but Elon may get us to warp 1 with a big enough battery.

Warp

One of my favorite science explainers, a German woman with PhD in theoretical physics and a skeptical outlook, has this to say about warp drives.?ÿ Many of her videos are worthwhile.

LOL!! They'll have to get in line behind those who object to my comments on some New York Times op-ed pieces regarding macroeconomic policy vs individual effort.

@bill93

The infinite energy discussion is moot until you get a guidance system or avoidance system that would prevent you from warping through anything, like a bb size chunk of anything with mass, esp at that velocity...

I suppose you could postulate that the pulse that preceded the craft would displace anything kind of like a wave, and the less dense aspect of space, nearly zero, might negate that theory immediately.?ÿ

?ÿ

it is a fun video to watch for sure.

Near the heart of the new industrial turbine field is a partially-constructed seven-acre array of solar panels to generate one megawatt compared to the 300 megawatts from the turbines.?ÿ They acquired 13 acres to allow for expansion later.
