Start at the Register of Deeds Office first to confirm the chain of title and related documents for your tract and any abutters necessary.?ÿ You do this yourself courtesy of the handy-dandy indexes that are easily found, including the original plats for subdivisions and the GLO plat maps.

Then go a few steps down the hall to the County Surveyor Office where there are seventeen different indexed resources available including railroad strip maps and road records plus section corner records: both pre- and post-corner filing requirement.?ÿ Bridge and highway plans are available that may impact your project.?ÿ Discover that the most recent corners you need which are available from HubTack are crap once you go through the information that last surveyor from that well-known city in Mali chose to ignore.

Should you have a project tied to more than one county, you drive to the adjacent county courthouse and repeat the process to the extent necessary to solve any remaining issues.

In some cases, you know certain old-timers to contact who can answer some vital questions.

Mr. Timbuktu spent too much of his budget on travel and lodging expenses to have enough time to do the job correctly.

Well then the County should issue the license, not the State.

Not joking about the 17 different sources of information being available.

@holy-cow good counties have good records retention. We have counties that were good about that, even some that put it online. Some county surveyors even aggressively went through and perpetuated the old corners because the old evidence was rotting away. We also have a State Forest which was previously owned by a lumber company, they started preserving their corners in the 1880s and in the 1930s had an LS on staff go through and replace all of their sticks, stakes, pipes, rods with concrete monuments which are still out there, easy to find. If they hadnƒ??t done that including marking new BTs through time weƒ??d be in a world of hurt now.

Little treats like the one below, can come in handy at times (1016 CRTHG), the second BM on the list (bottom of page 28 in Bulletin 889, I'm sure that there are others).

Wow, Loyal.?ÿ You picked one heck of a site.?ÿ This is close to the tri-corner of Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri.?ÿ The current owner/occupant of the parcel where this BM might still exist does quite a business, I hear.?ÿ I have no personal experience with this.?ÿ This is a spot where a County Attorney lost his job for soliciting bribes one evening.

@jph?ÿ

There are very poor practitioners in every line of work.?ÿ I went to a periodontist highly recommended by my dentist as he was the one my dentist used for himself.?ÿ Once I was supposed to be unconscious, a little fellow of Asian heritage entered the room and did the work on me.?ÿ The periodontist left the room. To top it off, I was charged for a procedure that did not happen.?ÿ I refused to pay that part of the bill.?ÿ They threatened to sue me.?ÿ I suggested how futile that would be as the proof that the procedure was not done was in my mouth for all to see.?ÿ That finally stopped the harassment.

I've worked for both private and government organizations and I've heard from people in both how bad the other is.

@holy-cow By any chance was that periodontist's office located inside that gentleman's club? It sounds like you got the VIP room by accident.
