The President of a Texas Corporation wasn't looking too happy with his employee's performance against a certain California Corporation, in fact he was glaring at them just a few minutes ago LOL.

I think he has the same thought about some of the plate umpire's calls, last night was worse than tonight, but both have been bad. Still trying to decide how big or small the strike zone is, it changes as the game goes on and from top to bottom of an inning.

I don't know much. I watched it last night because we were staying in the Forest HQ in Fort Bragg (California) and the Fire Station (closed for the winter) has a HD TV with cable. Eight Forestry Aides live there in a different part of the building but of course they all wanted to watch the game. So I watched it with them.

Not being a baseball fan it's a little difficult to keep up on TV because all they show is the pitcher/batter or the managers or some one in the stands; they rarely show the big picture.

Baseball is a game of intricacies, both in the rules and the performance. The subtleties were lost on me until my son started playing competitive baseball a few years ago. I've since managed to acquire an appreciation for maybe 50% of the game, with the remaining 50% still elusive. (I've had the infield fly rule explained to me at least a dozen times, and I still can't explain it to someone else.)

Tonight's game was hard to watch, at least the 8th inning. Walking multiple batters in succession isn't uncommon in my son's 13U games, but in pro ball -- the World Series no less -- it was dumbfounding. I felt sorry for the Rangers pitchers tonight.

HOW can you have that many walks in a row in the "World Series"??? Unacceptable. I bet the low ratings will now FALL through the floor.

Those Yankees made the Ranger pitchers look like Cy Young.

The Giants hitters will make them look like sayonara. (Apologies to Craig Nettles.)

Only in the Fire Station day room. The fire fighters normally pay for the cable themselves from their recreation fund. This fire station is collocated with the Forest HQ and the cable seems to be on year round so I'm not sure who is paying for it. One Captain told me he purchased the TV from the training budget (there are a lot of training videos on the shelf). Most of the TVs are fairly normal size but one station we stayed in (that was closed for the season) had a huge flat screen TV. The cable was turned off so we could only watch a movie (after work) but that was almost a home theater experience. Actually that one wasn't cable, it was satellite because it was in a remote rural town near Keith Williams.

Look on the bright side, the State is saving on the hotel bill for the crew.

It seems like when San Fransisco does well in one of these corporate contests they are almost god-like. And when they lose they are just horrible. There must be something in the water.

There are a lot of Irish Bars near the Saint Francis which is on Union Square. Maybe Texas is spending too much time visiting them.

Think about Joe Montana and the 49ers 20+ years ago. 49ers fans were in ecstacy and everyone else was just thinking this is too awful.

don't be touchy Dave

Certainly, these stations need equipment to show training videos and to be able to get news from the outside world, when they are involved in fire fighting activities.

I was joshing, but there are some that would be doubled over at Any thought that there might be a single extra cent wasted.....yet they would not bat an eye at paying the head of the UC system 850K a year along with a $12,000 a month housing expense....

I didn't mean to come across as touchy.

I knew you were joshing but I was explaining for others.

I can see why there's about 500 applicants for every entry level fire job (even in good times) but they pay for their meals and TV. The State does provide them with a mattress from the lowest bidder, though.

Free Government Cable ?

Cable companies require a franchise agreement in each municipality. Around here before granting that franchise the municipal government requests free connections to government buildings and schools. It is a minimal expense for the cable company and is Good Will. I doubt CA is any different.

I don't know.

Possibly cable, if they can get it, is free but satellite costs. A lot of our Fire Stations are in remote rural areas.

Steve

I think this thread most properly fits in Business/Finance because professional sports are a business and the cost of government cable TV is obviously a finance question 😉

I don't know if the cable companies actually have a franchise because I have a choice of 3 at my house; Comcast, Surewest (a local company I use) and AT&T.
