DISCLAIMER - I have nothing to do with this company and I don't own any stock.

I have despised Verizon for so long that a month ago I decided to do something about it. I had already gotten rid of cell service with them so I decided to dump long distance as well.

Did some poking around and found Pioneer Telephone out of Maine ( pioneertelephone.com ) and checked them out. Their rates are astoundingly low (2.7 cents interstate and 4.9 cents intrastate). Their reviews are good. And best of all, when I called a real person answered the phone.

So I've had Pioneer for a month and service is good - no glitches at all with the change over. And I just got my first bill and it is about 80% less than Verizon.

So, if you want to consider a new long distance company, I recommend them.

Are they VOIP or do they use POTS (plain old telephone system)?

Personally, I think VOIP is the way to go for business telephony. Just keep one local POTS line to dial 911.

Telephone Service

It's difficult to do better than Ooma (ooma.com)! Two lines for less than $150 per year including unlimited long distance.

And, they received high marks from Consumer's Reports!

Also, each line can be in a different area code.

I'm nearing the end of my second year of usage.

They also have an app that will allow one to use an Ipod for free outgoing calls.

First you can use your phone as an MP3 player,
Now you can make calls from an IPOD!!

Where will this all end?

Telephone Service

I know a couple people, not surveyors, who have ooma. They like it
and use the ipad thing. They, however, run with no charge, just the
one-time charge of $100. Once you have that, everything is free unless
you want additional features.

Ooma is for NON business use only per their web site AND limited to 5000 minutes per year, that is a lot of talk, BUT maybe not in a business either.

I am using VoIP with a local provider, BUT have some intermittent quality issues of dropping one end of the call. I am getting close to going totally cellular and using something like Xlink to hook to my existing phone system. With a multi line cell plan, the extra cell line is actually less costly than VoIP.

Right now at T-Mobile, you can get a two line plan for $100/month for unlimited Talk/Text/Data (additional unlimited lines are $35/month) handsets aren't subsidized at those rates and you have to buy them outright OR bring your own GSM phone to the game. IMO, the T-mobile plans are the best rates in the USA right now.

Yes, one time I Googled "I hate Verizon" and there were over 2,200,000 hits at that time.

I ported my office land line to Callcentric(voip). $3.95/mo with all the bells and whistles.
