Dude,

Our current managerial system is tracked by an overbearing micromanager who I call Dad. I have never really developed the skills as a manager because of the previously mentioned overbearing micromanager. More importantly, I need a method to keep track of these projects.

Value Based Pricing does not eliminate the need for time sheets and there are several services that we offer that cannot be priced based on value, ie Construction Layout. So, I cannot forfeit the hourly basis of the 9-5 world.

Thats what I thought too... until a few weeks ago when my son bought an iphone 4S and started showing me things he could do with/on it.. and talking to it: "What time does the Packer game start on Sunday" produced the correct answer in about 2 seconds! And because I needed a way for my new network rover to connect to the WisCORS network, the iphone (acting as hotspot) was a viable option. And now that Verizon is giving away Iphone 4 units if you buy some accessories, I committed to one of them last Friday. Saturday I used it for running the network rover.. worked just fine!! For the cost difference between the 'dumb' phone I had vs. the Iphone, for me it was a 'smart' move to get one. And I was also investigating keeping track of project times... on the Iphone. This thread has helped - thanks!

It is true we all must learn to adapt to the world in which we live. Guess I'm lucky (or unlucky depending on your point of view) to have just one uptight a*** for a boss. (For those wondering I am the uptight a** of whom I speak.)

Had a great time at the convention btw. Anyone in that area who didn't attend has no idea just how much they missed.

There's a difference going on here. You are getting use out of and making money with the help of your smart phone. I am not working, so the cost of a full data plan just doesn't make sense. I "don't get" texting, that would be a useless feature. When I want to write an email or respond in a forum, I want a full keyboard, thank you. If I were working on a drawing, I need a screen big enough to get some perspective. I might consider watching a short program on that tiny screen (in an airport), but if I want to watch a full length movie, give me my 32 inch tv. I could look up something "quick and dirty" on the internet, but then again, if I want to spend any real time, I will be using a laptop at the very least.

There are uses for smart phones, I have no use for any of them at this point in my life. I have many other things to concern myself with. Call me a curmudgeon. Antique. Even a Luddite if so inclined. Any of those terms could well apply. (scary to say that since I used to be an "early adapter" when it came to technology. Now, much technology just makes things harder, not easier) My idea of a phone is not something that is a babysitter to me.

This is what we use. Its alright, the time sheet portion is easy to use, but I'm not a fan of the invoices it generates.

We use QB too...

It was great when Quickbooks supported time tracking and billing. But when they stopped time tracking and billing manager service the search for a good replacement started. Though intuit marketplace list various tools that integrate with QB for time tracking and billing we were not satisfied.

Moreover, we didn't want to use several tools for project management as a single piece, so we looked out for a tool that can do time tracking, billing, invoicing, project management and expense management and also integrate with QB and found Replicon - http://www.replicon.com/time-bill

It wouldn't be an issue in Massachusetts, but for those who work near time zone boundaries, you might want to see if software can deal with time entered in different time zones.

As for smart phones, I'm no expert, but the apps I've worked with so far aren't much use in areas where there is no data coverage (except the calculator).
