The first licensed surveyor I worked for was also a licensed forester.
Pulling chain by compass and busting brush, wading creeks and going thru whatever without cutting brush was a normal thing to get to a point where a count of board feet in a 50ft radius was taken.
We would do 70% count up to around 85% count for the boss to give the client a harvest amount for the timber on a property.
The owner would get that 70% to 85% amount for his timber and they would cut much more count to be sold at the mill for pure profit that did not get back to the timber owner.
I hope to never cruise timber again.
Today's foresters look at google earth and visit the property, measure the timber plots with a handheld GPS unit or other simpler way and sample the diameter and height of trees to put out an estimated amount.
Bottom line is that the owner of the timber may at best get 1/3 the value of his trees.
