That's just scary. You read that and just have to wonder how expensive California must be to live in.
Alameda county is looking for a PLS now hiring range is 54 to 63/hr.
Scary? I wouldn't say that. Maybe actual skilled surveyors are finally getting paid. A person with the minimum requirements would rate the minimum pay of the specified range. That's about $33/hr, or $70k per year. That's not really all that much for a skilled person with some experience these days.?ÿ
One bedroom apartment rents in Sac area run in the $1500/month and up range, so, yes. Cost of living is high. 9.3% of that income is going to state income tax, 7.25% to sales tax.?ÿ
9.3% of that income is going to state income tax
That's the marginal rate that applies to AGI over $58k.?ÿ After figuring in deductions it's unlikely that a Sac County PC will pay at that rate.
But yes, CA is expensive, especially housing.
The re in San Francisco always seems to make the news. I'd somehow figured the rest of California couldn't be too far behind.

It depends on what you mean by "far behind."?ÿ Pretty much all of California housing is expensive when viewed as a ratio between median household income and median house price.?ÿ The little city I live in (Davis) was recently ranked near the bottom in that regard.?ÿ But that doesn't mean that housing prices are anywhere near the same as you move around the state.?ÿ
One of the reasons Davis housing prices are so high is that folks who own a home in the S.F. Bay Area can sell their little place for, say $2M and buy a bigger and newer house here -- less than 100 miles away -- for less than half of that.?ÿ With more corporations allowing their staff to work remotely, more of those Bay Area folks are making the move.
