CITY SURVEYOR
ABOUT THE POSITION
Salary Range: $6,380 - $8,977 per month

The City of Redding is establishing an eligibility list to fill a current vacancy. Under the direction of the Director of Public Works, the employee in this position will supervise and coordinate the activities of the survey crew, office survey staff, and land use law development review staff; provide a variety of professional and technical survey assistance and direction related to public works projects, coordinate preparation of easements, including documentation, and perform office and field surveying work.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Perform technical review of maps, assessment diagrams, and landscape maintenance districts; check maps; sign parcel and subdivision maps, check various other drawings; review easement and title documents; review parcel and subdivision maps for survey control data; prepare documentation for use in acquiring additional rights-of-way property and easements; approve maps and legal descriptions; coordinate determination and recording of abandonments for City; handle inquiries/concerns from the public; coordinate City activities with other governmental agencies and outside organizations; select, supervise, train, and evaluate staff; and perform City Surveyor related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of: Survey law, planning and zoning rules and regulations; City codes and standards; State Subdivision Map Act; Professional Land Surveyors Act; fundamentals of civil engineering and surveying; construction methods, materials, and products; relevant laws and regulatory codes dealing with development, construction, surveying and real estate; surveying methods, practices and techniques; methods and techniques used in the design and construction of a variety of public works projects; working knowledge of land surveying principles and practices as applied to preliminary location, property, construction, precise traverse, precise leveling and topographic surveys; working knowledge of plane geometry and its application to land surveying; algebra, geometry, trigonometry as applied to technical engineering and surveying calculations; Geographical Information System mapping computer and related technology; effective supervisory principles and practices; estimating project time expenditure; and modern office procedures.
Ability to: Interact effectively with the public and employees, gather data; make accurate engineering computations; read and interpret maps and plans for location and construction surveys; interpret legal descriptions; read and interpret complex property descriptions; understand, interpret, and prepare legal property descriptions, engineering records, and maps; perform freehand and complex engineering design and drafting work; keep records and notes; prepare reports and records; communicate well orally and in writing; operate personal computer; and effectively supervise staff.
Education/Experience: Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying, including a high school diploma, or equivalent, plus additional college-level course work in mathematics, surveying, and drafting preferred; five years progressively responsible experience in engineering technician work, with major emphasis on land surveying and title industry procedures; and one year of supervisory experience.
Special Requirements: Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a Land Surveyor in the State of California OR Certificate of Registration as a professional civil engineer in the State of California issued prior to January 1, 1982, and possession of the appropriate California driver's license or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.

Veterans Credit: Veterans who have received an honorable discharge from the military service and receive a passing score on the examination will have 2 points added to their final examination score. To obtain this credit, veterans MUST provide a copy of the DD214, indicating honorable discharge, WITH EACH EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION BEFORE THE CLOSING DATE.
Test Requirements: An oral board examination will be conducted.
