That's what I did. I went over to a local Survey Supply place and tried them all.
I personally liked the Subsurface best. It has a display (I have an ML-1M) but I never look at that.
The volume isn't as convenient to change as the classic Schoenstedt.
I have acquired two Schoenstedts in the past few years, sent both to be repaired and have essentially two new locators, so I'm set until the technology makes the next quantum leap. Interestingly enough, sent both to be repaired with their original cases, received both back with the better cases (the ones that are thicker and wider than the original cube case) at no extra charge.
I'm a Big Yellow guy all the way, although I rented a really good Fisher from a company in Memphis several years ago while our Schoenstedt was in the shop for repair. I suggested we buy it, but was nixed. When I turned it in, we had paid 700 in rental, to find out we could've bought one brand new for 550. Guess I'll never have the mental acuity to run a business, as that made no sense whatsoever to me.
Here is an old thread about pin finders.
I thought it would be nice to bring it to the top, and continue the discussion about which one is best for a surveyor.
I have only owned Schonstedts. I have use a GA 52, GA 52B, GA 92XTD, and now I have a GA72. The 92 is in the shop. I still feel that there is improvement to be had in pin finders.
Remember, in 50 - 100 yrs, there will be more technology out there, and somebody will be finding stuff we missed.
