"Manhattan's sinking like a rock
Into the filthy Hudson what a shock
They wrote a book about it
They said it was like ancient Rome"
-Lou Reed, Romeo Had Juliette

Why sea level in the D.C. region is rising faster than anywhere else on the East Coast

"They confirmed that the ‰ÛÏsinking‰Û at hand is a remnant of the last ice age when a vast sheet of ice covered much of North America, as far south as the Ohio Valley and New York City. That glacier was heavy, causing the ground to sink beneath its weight. As a result, the areas bordering the ice ‰ÛÓ like Washington, D.C. ‰ÛÓ bulged upward. ‰ÛÏIt‰Ûªs a bit like sitting on one side of a water bed filled with very thick honey,‰Û lead author Ben DeJong explains."

Apparently Sonny Curtis, Bobby Fuller and the Clash were correct, you can't fight the law (at least not Newton's Third Law)

On a more serious personal note‰Û?..Mr. Coffee refuses to drip a drop here this morning. Lights are on faintly. Cleaned it out thoroughly and performed a complete examination but no go.
As far as the topic‰Û?when Dr. Dokka of LSU explained about the tectonic nature of the Mississippi Delta as related to subsidence, coastal erosion, sea level rise etc. because of the sedimentary loads of the Mississippi River region , I realized it was game over. Nature wins. But we are going to spent $8 billion on coastal erosion here very soon. All the "big dogs"are lining up to conquer the problem or apply the band aid so to speak.

I'm going to obtain a vacuum coffee pot from Amazon, $56. It's not automatic.

Global warming?, I doubt it. I think it's all the hot air from the talking heads in DC. 😉

Robert, probably the only way to fix our coast is to start punching large holes in the right bank of the Mississippi. This way she do what she was meant to do, make land. But too much money tied up in our ports b/w red stick and the bowl.

One of my first field trips in college was to Houston and the 1929 Gulf Building that in 1971 housed Houston Lighting & Power among other agencies.

Their surveyors showed us their technique for monitoring a bench mark in the basement parking level to keep up with the rate the The Gulf Building was sinking.

B-)
