I moved up from 5603 to S7, now I have the MT1000 prism working with the S7. I want to know if i can use the small 360 mini prism from 5603 gun to connect to S7 and possibly take interval shots to MT1000 and mini prism. Has anybody tried it?
You would have to set it up as passive and not active I believe.?ÿ It will autolock but you wouldn't have radio channels like the MT1000.?ÿ Make sure to get your prism offsets right too.?ÿ Probably just set up multiple prisms under the prism icon so you can flip back and forth as needed.
Why can't I add the miniprism to the list of prisms in Trimble Access? it has been used with 5603 as active tracker. If you say it will autolock then it should track it and be an active tracker prism.
The MT1000 and the "5603 mini prism" (I assume that is one of the RMT units with prisms for distance measurement Infrared LED diodes for tracking) are similar in that the MT1000 uses "glass" for distance measurement and Infrared LED diodes for tracking. Except that the S series total stations can track glass as "passive" (in which case they track the glass and get distance from it), or the LED's as "active" (in which case they track the LED's but get distance from the glass). The 5600 series only ever tracked the LED's and was only ever active tracking - turn the LED's off and she-no-track. In addition, the MT1000 LED frequencies are not the same as the 5600 series RMT frequencies - there's a recent thread on this - so a S series will never active track a 5600 series RMT.
The Green machines are only passive, i.e. they track only glass and get distance from the glass. There's been many threads debating the pros and cons of the two systems. The apparent advantage of the active tracking system is that it won't track any rogue glass - like hi-vis, vehicle reflectors, etc - simply because it's not tracking glass, and there are a number of threads on that. Having said that I've also seen some white-papers around that suggest that the green machines have a camera in them that recognises only "approved" prism shapes and hence should only track them?

No, if you set tracking to passive for that prism in the software it will lock and track just fine.?ÿ It will find vests and cars a bit more interesting like all passive tracking robots do.
No, once the S6 is locked it will follow the prism as a regular prism (passive mode = only with reflection of the glass). So hide your other prism for the S6, wear no reflectieve safety vest and check regular by holding your hand between prism & S6 and keeping an eye on your dc.

I'm having hard time understanding the technology behind passive tracking as @richard-imrie explained.
If the S7 (which I use) has a camera which recognize the shape of MT1000 (or RMT?), then it shouldn't lock to my vest or a traffic sign.
That portion of Richard-imrie's post was in reference to white papers he's seen on how Leica's passive tracking works. Trimble S6's & S7's will track active, semi-active or passive. In passive mode they will absolutely lock onto vests, signs etc in the right circumstances. In fact, the new Trimble AT360 target is basically two cylinders of reflective tape behind a clear glass or plastic cylinder to keep them dry.
It's such a pity having a RMT from Trimble sitting around and not being able to use it in active tracking, just because Trimble decided to bring new prisms only for S series. My guess was since RMT being working as active tracker the same way the new MT1000 works, I should be able to use it simultaneously with MT1000 to save time.
I'm fairly sure I've seen twice a 5600 robot lock on to a window-reflection of the RMT active tracking LED's. So it's not infallible.
One of the many good things about the 5600 series is the "mosquito" in the instrument, which if you have it turned on, puts out a whine when the instrument is getting distance return from a target. Handy when doing robotic in the trees with the DC at the instrument, and the sound does also carry a long way and hence still useful when the DC is at the prism. Does the mosquito still live in the S-series?
I should be able to use it simultaneously with MT1000 to save time.
I don’t get it where you will save time by switching to a 2nd prism, can you clarify?
Not sure, if it’s there we don’t use it because there’s no need for it. The S6 measured so much faster then the 5800!
if for a moment the gun sees the prism it has measured a distance. We use the tracking light to find the gun from behind the prism, then move slightly L/R and/or U/D to take an offset shot.
