As many of you probably know I'm getting back into surveying after a 8 year hiatus, and catching up to the new technology has been interesting to say the least. I recently purchased a R10 Base/Rover. I now have an opportunity to purchase a R6 or R8 model 2 at what I believe to be good prices. I don't really need either of them but I thought it might good to have one of them to use as a base head and then then turn my 2 r10 heads into rovers on bigger jobs.

I know this is possible after doing some research but am I losing any of the technology features my r10 has by doing this? Not having the ability to xfilll comes to mind but I don't see me trying to utlize that until later down the road.

Check to see if the R8 is narrow band and capable of CMRx. I think the CMRx is just a firmware update and the narrow band might require a new file being loaded for the transmit frequencies.

You are going to have a shorter range using the R8/R6 units as base as they have only a 0.5 watt radio, whereas the R10 has a 2 watt internal. Another issue could be if either R6/R8 unit is able to transmit.

Yes, we run two rovers off one base regularly. The internal radio on the R10 will need to be configured to the radio, but it takes about 5 minutes and you use a survey style other than VRS to get moving. As for losing tech features, the xfill, as I understood it, is only needed when running out of cell service, so if you're on a radio, it's not an option. As far as the tilt and everything else, it's still there and functions well.

The only issue I would have is making sure that the base is tracking glonass and other GNSS SV's. If not, then you're back to NAVSTAR only. I don't remember what model of the R8 is NavStar only, but it may or may not be the model 2. If the model 2 tracks the GNSS, then you have zero issues.

Not if you use an external radio like our 25 watt radios. Picks it up just like the rover at 3 to 4 miles, maybe further but we don't push beyond that.
