Anybody use these? Do they have built-in limitations? The price point is more attractive than the S series from what I gather. SPS stands for Site Positioning System and is marketed to the construction sector.

We borrowed one for a couple of weeks, couldn't get it to work with Trimble Access, had to use SCS900.

I was not the one setting it up. It may have been operator error. I would have exhausted every possible solution before I used SCS900.

That's about the limit of my experience with one.

I dont think it was operator error.

As I understand it, Trimble have deliberately blocked the SPS range from Access.

A "business decision" - you know to make the surveyors purchase the more expensive S range

Hey mate,
I was using an SPS730 up until a few months back and I was using Trimble Access with it. When you do the instrument setup it doesn't have the SPS series as a selection, you need to select the S Series total stations and it'll work just like an S6.

As for performance, I'm currently using an S6 jigger and it feels identical to the SPS730 I was using previously. I think the difference you'll find is that the SPS series will come with SCS900 as the standard packaged software, if you want Access you'll be paying through the nose for it, or at least we had to as we didn't realise until after the sale was made. Maybe if you convince Sitech to replace SCS900 with Access before you make the purchase it might work out cheaper.

If you plan to use it for machine control down the line you will have to get the SPS series, I don't think the S series can match the update rate, this is the only difference between the actual instruments as far as I'm aware.

In the olden days of the Trimble 5600, I think the machine control instrument in that series was marked "ATS" and it did have the faster update rate than a normal 5600 but I think the catch is/was the ATS didn't have reflectorless. Not sure if a similar thing is happening with the SPS vs S.

I know that the SPS730 has reflectorless capabilities, but I think you might be right with some of the SPS jiggers. The SPSx30 instruments are slightly different to the SPSx20 jiggers. Maybe the reflectorless capabilities might be what differentiates them.

Is there a Trimble rep out there who can clarify this for us? the x30 instruments from what I've experienced are a slightly more capable version of the S series, so I'd suggest if you can pick it up with the right software for cheaper, don't look a gift horse in the mouth 😀

I have two SPS 930's and run we use Trimble Access and the older Survey Controller to operate these units. If you use SCS900 to operate an SPS 930 you have the option to auto scan with the direct reflect. Otherwise, their is no difference between these units and it's counterpart. If you have any specific questions, I'll be happy to answer them.

Some of the S series features are not available on the SPS series. (Finelock, Vision). SPS series do have synchronous angle and distance reporting allowing them to be used for machine control.

Apart from that they will connect to Access identically. Older versions of Access required an unlock code.

If the makers of nails could do it, they would make them only work with their brand of hammer. Sigh.
