OK, I freely admit, I am horrible at tree ID. It was by far the worst course in college, and I have not gotten much better since. Recently a buddy recommended a book to help out, a field guide to tree ID. Great idea, and I was just about to order it and then I was thinking, I always carry my phone to take a pic of the monuments, so what about a digital book I could carry on the phone - then one step further, what about an app?
A search yields something perfect, an app that you can give your location, take a picture of a leaf, and it will give you the top choices of the tree: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/10/business/10novel.html
Problem is that article is 5 years old and I don't see the app.
Has anyone seen or is using something similar? If not recommend a specific field guide I can load on the phone?
Thanks.

You may be looking for Leafsnap app by Colimbia University.
Dan Robison linked it here a few years ago during a ID thread.
I downloaded it to an IPad and it is ok.
I don't use an IPad very much anymore.
One of the nice features was that users could add to the database.
I saw a few locals that I knew add pictures for my area.
It will be in the Apple App Store. It was free with no ads.
I saw that one and it seemed to have a bunch of bad reviews. I will give it a shot.
Found the leafsnap website. After all this time, it is still apple only. Only apple around my house is in the fruit tree 🙂
Found this in teh FAQ:
* When will there be an Android version of Leafsnap?
We have one under development, but since the app is free and the work is being done by volunteers, we do not have a release date, nor a firm guess as to when this will be.
* Will there be a Blackberry/Palm/Windows Mobile/Windows/Computer version of Leafsnap?
We are working on a volunteer basis and thus have to prioritize our efforts. Our primary goals are to expand coverage and release an Android app first. After that, we will consider additional platforms if there is sufficient demand.
