I was given a pair of HiPer Lite+ units by a friend that's recently retired. I'm hoping for some advice as to which software is best to use, PC-CDU or TRU (Topcon Receiver Utility)? I'm also using the 7-pin Fischer to USB cable to connect the receiver to the PC.
I'm running TRU - Personal Computer v3.6, build 169638 Thursday, June 17, 2021 which I found at:
https://www.topconpositioning.com/support/updates/HIPER_LITE
I'm running PC-CDU v7.12 MS (Build: December 21, 2007) which I found at:
https://kb.unavco.org/kb/article/topcon-pccdu-v-7-12-0-0-ms-controller-software-13.html
Using TRU, the GNSS Board (HGGDT_7) firmware on both units have been updated from v3.5 Mar, 16, 2011 p1 to v3.5 Feb, 01, 2019 p5; again, from:> https://www.topconpositioning.com/support/updates/HIPER_LITE
- The first issue relates to being unable to connect the PC with the receiver using PC-CDU which makes me ask: Is there a newer version of PC-CDU than v7.12 MS (Build: December 21, 2007)?
- The only manual that I've found ( https://fccid.io/LCB-840802) was for model HiPer Lite circa August 2003, and not the HiPer Lite+, which references PC-CDU software frequently. So my second question: Is there any reason to keep looking for PC-CDU to work or has TRU completely replaced all of its functionalities?
Both units charged up over night, Battery A on the base looks marginal, Battery B just fine; Battery A on the rover looks okay, and Battery B just fine.
being unable to get my new windows machine to connect to the Hypers was kind of the last straw that put them on the shelf forever
If you had a serial connection, perhaps it would work...but finding the correct usb driver...lets just say I figured it was cheaper to bill out my time to clients and buy a new receiver...

BTW, you can run them off motorcycle batts, so if you have good cells in the rover, then just run the base with the motorcycle bat.
That connector that is between the charger and the connector to the unit is pretty easy to find, I think.
@dmyhill Good for you and your clients! What did you end up buying?
Before you shelved them, did you try this (attached) driver? It was the only one I found, but still PC-CDU wasn't happy; however, I wondered if having installed that driver, and then TRU, TRU worked from the start.
I'm not expecting these HiPers will be good for RTK, but I'm hoping to use them for science experiments and other static applications.
Use PC-CDU on those older units.?ÿ I have found TRU will not find these.
Also make certain to leave those plugs in the USB ports. The pin config for Power and USB are identical. If you plug the power cable in the USB port, you will fry the board.

Here is the last firmware for GNSS FW 3.5p5 - Hiper_Lite+
?ÿ
BTW: They should fine as RTK base and rover.

Lee, I think that's the same TRU version that I linked in my OP above
@leegreen Do you have a link to the latest version of PC-CDU?
?ÿ
I think PC-CDU v7.12 is the last version.
Try connecting via a 9 PIN COM port on your PC??ÿ Don't use USB for firmware update on those units.
If you don't have a PC with 9 PIN com port, then get a pin to the USB adapter cable.
Don't use USB for firmware update on those units.
Why not? I had no issue when I updated the firmware using the USB ports on the receivers
?ÿHas TRU completely replaced all of PC-CDU's functionalities?

Well, there were more reasons to upgrade. Mainly, there are a lot of sats up there that those old Topcons do not track. As well, the cost of replacing the batteries is a large percentage of what a new unit costs (assuming you go with one of the new brands), and if a board goes, forget about it.
If I was doing hobby stuff with them, that is fine, but for making money a new unit is worth the money. Look at a Carlson or a Stonex receiver, they do not cost much.
To directly answer your question, we bought and used Hemisphere's until we went full Topcon with HR's.

There is an example...RTK for $700

I do note that they say the WSRN is free, which is not the case as far as I know.
But they have Android Micro Survey and the receiver for $999. That is insane. You supply the phone and power supply, but still.
@dmyhill I still use my original Topcon Hiper GGD from around 2001 for OPUS static sessions.?ÿ I still use PC-CDU to download the file from the hiper to the PC, via a serial connection from the hiper to the 9-pin connection in the back of the computer.?ÿ It work flawlessly.
