To all the surveying veterans!

Can i get some suggestions on how to tackle a horizontal layout issue problem. I used to use a Trimble Robotic Total Station and the Tablet. But now at the new workplace, the systems are outdated. I want to know the best approach to attack the issue. Any guidance on what equipment to procure to enable the CAD overlays which makes life easier for the layout person on filed to stake the points.

Thank you all!

I would think that just about any current data collector can handle CAD overlays. Obviously on the Trimble side the Tablet has a vastly superior screen to the TSC3, which has got to be nearing the end of its life span. Access also takes advantage of the larger display to offer options you don't get with the TSC3. Additionally, you can now purchase a license for Access to run on any third-party tablet; my concern with that would be whether the license is transferrable.

Bottom line is that any good robot will work for what you need. If Trimble's what you're used to and you're happy with it there's your answer; but if you're open to changing I'm sure Leica, Carlson, Sokkia, Topcon, et al would love the opportunity to show you what they can do. A huge part of my decision would be based on who had the strongest dealer representation in my area. I see you're from AZ; I know Allen Instruments in Scottsdale is a very strong dealer for Trimble.

@Lee D thanks for the reply. We have TSC2's here and i heard SCS900 can run on TSC2 as well. Also is the Access and SCS900 with the same functionality? Yes we already got a quote from allen insttruments for the tablet w/access software. Please walkme through the differences between those two software. Our main job is horizontal layout for the flat work and vertical's for the anchor bolts, Decks, etc. Thanks again Lee appreciate your input

Trimble Survey Controller (the software) will do what you want.
Is that is what you have already?

@squowse we do have this software. but we have been getting errors lately. So we want to move ahead with the SCS900 so we get a CAD overlay to atleast attend the horizontal layout issues. But I'm not sure about the Vertical Layout still on how SCS900 or Acess can help us in. It would be grateful if you can point me to reading material pertaining to this issues.

Thanks!

@Nate The Surveyor I'm that kid actually haha. The thing is nate I have a lot of constraints and trying to adapt with what we have currently. I want to know the best practices and build on from there. All I need is some guidance, because are layout veterans are not tech savvy and I wan to help them to get up to speed.

Thank you

SCS900 is made specifically for contractors and doesn't have the power that Access has. However, if all you're doing is layout, it may be a better option for you. I don't think Allen Instrument handles the construction line; you may need to find out who your Sitech dealer is and give them a call. I'd get a very comprehensive demo before choosing SCS900 over Access, but as I said it may end up being better suited to your particular needs.

Edit: Sitech has a dealership right there in Mesa, you can get all of the info here:

Access is basically the same Trimble Survey Controller. SCS900 is completely different. In my view a lot harder to get into and not as appropriate for building layout - but I'm sure it has it's fans.
What kind of errors have you been having? I always found the use of DXF active maps to be one of the best things about TSC / Access.

[emoji23] I was that kid for my dad. If not for me he'd still be writing his angles with a pencil and making copies on his blue ray
