I don't remember the name or the company that produced them but they looked pretty cool. They had a barb or something that came out if it was ever pulled on as I recall.

These FENO markers sound like what you are thinking of. http://www.berntsen.com/Surveying/Survey-Monuments/FENO-Survey-Monument/FENO-Spike/ctl/ViewProduct/mid/630/itemID/462

Yeah! Those are the ones. I assume they are locatable since they are galvanized steel. Those 'roots' should lock it down nicely. A little pricey but not too bad for what they do. Will have to keep those in mind if the job warrants it.

Galvanized steel does not always ring well. If you do not have good ties you may not find them again.

Had a problem recently with DOT bars with aluminum caps. A two-inch overlay had placed the caps/top of bar about 2.5" deep. Absolutely no signal whatsoever despite excellent ties. Started chipping out the asphalt. We were within a half inch of the cap before we could get a signal. Strange. Very strange. Had a chat with the area DOT surveyor. He reported an identical circumstance on about 20 such bars.
