What a great treat!!!! Nate and I spent a big chunk of our afternoon on the phone with each other. It's wonderful to have such adventures brought about by the existence of this great site and its predecessors.
I was reminded a bit of a similar conversation a number of years ago with Paul Plutae in southern California.
We need to do this sort of thing from time to time. It's lonely out here in Squareville.
We become licensed surveyors.
There are 2 legs that surveyors build their business upon.
1.) The legal world of deeds, transactions, and contracts.
2.) The technology world of the tools necessary to get the job done. Gps. Compasses, alidades, calculators, cad, least squares, total stations, software, etc.
But, the 3rd leg of this is US. The surveyors. It's where the 1st 2 are combined. And, the quality of the assembly of 1, and 2, is all dependant on our "want to". How much "want to" that we have got.
Now, number one, above, changes with each job. We have to submit 2, and 3, to the needs of one.
However, number 2 changes yearly, monthly, and sometimes weekly. So, a surveyor may START a job with one set of tools, and finish with another.
And, #3, gets tired, of trying to keep up with 1. And 2.
Once we get all 3 running nicely, we get old, and tired. Now, we have to hand it to another generation... Mmm hmm.
And, that's surveying!

Very nice summation, Nate.
The constant changing in technology is welcomed by the young and cursed by the old. We seem to spend half our time relearning how to do what we do. Just yesterday my wife's phone was sounding off, I won't call it ringing, and it took me almost too long to figure out how to answer the ###### thing. That's not right.
