...and I'll be setting 2 more. Of course, the two I'll be setting will be replaceing the 2" P-K nails that I dig up looking for a more substantial monument. Silly me thinking that nice ring I heard was a pipe or rebar and not a little old nail. I mean, this was on the inside of a block in sandy soil and grass.
Funny thing is, whoever set the nails knew where things were at. Their (former) positions were well supported by other monumentation that was proved to be correct.
The last surveyor in the block, and the reason for so many monuments, apparently couldn't agree with himself each time he went out there.
Pincushions? Well, most have spreads of multiple feet.
So, this is a 300' x 250' block with 5 parcels. Because of ROW taking and vacation, I had 19 corners to look for and found 32 somethings in the ground. This is my record. What's your "that's nothing...?" 🙂
It is common practice for me to set a nail/bc in the vicinity of where a monument should be so I don't have to set a monument from so far away.
That is after I have searched the area for a monument and have not found anything.
Sometimes I set it where the monument should fall and other times I do not.
Sometimes I set two or more nail/bc so I can pull distances instead of using an instrument to set a monument.
Then there are the monuments that I've looked for and have found as may as 5 nails inside of an area a trash bag would cover.

I love the trash bag analogy. There used to be a guy around here who would never punch his 2" Alum caps with the point, claiming "it's there somewhere". Then we just suggested he use manhole covers, but the trash bag seems almost more appropriate.
But the 32 of 19 is a pretty good record. I guess it's better than 1 of 19, but it does tend to confuse the public who we are protecting
Yep, I do the same thing with nails. I do try to pull them when the job is over.
