I turned on my BanTam robot radios last Wednesday on a project and they simply wouldn't connect to each other, so I called Hayes and they said that they are no longer building or supporting the BanTam series. They are trying to band-aid/repair/cobble something together for my radio situation, but what happens if they can't? What's a person to do? Apparently the next generation radios won't talk to my Topcon 815A, but I'm not sure why. I'm not a fan of the "planned obsolescence" business theory. The economy hasn't recovered as well here as some areas, or I'm not getting that work... I'm about as steady as usual, and have been about the same for 3 year... So, I can't really afford new equipment at this time.

Anybody got any suggestions, or some BanTams they want to sell?

Thanks for allowing me to vent.

BTW: I'm not upset at Hayes at all, I just need to keep a system working that works (basically) the way I want and need it too without spending too much money.

Carl

Isn't that a result of the band width changes?

Even if they had it in stock they could not sell it.

You should be able to cable from your 815 to a Parani setup. Pay attention to multiple null modem connections in the conversion.

Not bandwith changes. This is hardware and being knocked around issues. I'll have to read up on this Parani setup, I know nothing about it. Thanks.

My Sokkia Robot Came With A Parani Setup

Instrument/null modem cable/Parani --- Parani/active prism/cable/data collector

A few weeks ago the new Parani 1000 was discussed on this board. Hint, get more than the stub antenna.

The data collector does not care how the data got there.

This happened to me earlier in the year and I wasn't sure what to do. Reading the other DIY post on the board I decided to buy the Piranni units and give it a shot. The new sd1000 units were a little longer than the old ones, but they will fit in the bantam cases. So I just took out the old units, plugged in the new units, set the pin settings, and kept on trucking. If you have any questions, shoot me an email with your number and I will be happy to answer them.

Contact Troy at Deaton Geo-tronics

http://geo-tronics.com/Geo-Tronics_Service_Page.html

He services my Fantam radios and I'm pretty sure he was the one who came up with the Bantam radios. He was with Hayes for years but has since left and started his own company.

You will be very pleased with his service.

"Mack", I have been looking at the Pirani setup also. I'm thinking that's my next step if I get bad news back.

Thank you very much for your offer, I may very well be taking you up on that.

Pretty sure the guts of the bantam is a parani radio. Perhaps I'm mistaken.

I just went through this scenario.
Troy made me a replacement and had it back to me in a few days.
He said he was working on a new radio setup.
He was the innovator of the Bantam and I can't wait to see what he comes up with.

Probably Joe, but I'm getting worked out with Geo-tronics and Hayes.

Mucho appreciated though. 🙂

When watching The Jetsons on Saturday morning

Would you have ever believed the words "robot" and "obsolete" would appear in the same sentence in your lifetime?
