Hi guys
When doing reflectorless shots I often use a Trimble S7 as a conventional machine. I stand behind it moving it around by hand. Do I need to "take it out of robotic mode" before doing this or do I just get on with it? The last thing I want to do is break something. When I move it around I hear lots of electronic "screeching" and wondered if I shouldn't be doing it!

The trimbles can get the shakes. There is a disconnect mode on the logger. Or are you using it with a faceplate?

I have a S3 and manually aim reflectorless shots all the time. I believe what you are hearing is the the mechanics for the reflectorless laser. I hear clicking and other noises when taking reflectorless shots, which seems to be the norm with most instruments I've used.?ÿ

At this point the machine is quite east to move (minus the exponential crosshair movement when manipulating the horizontal/vertical dials). PS8182 maybe correct in assuming the noises are from the mechanics of the reflectorless laser.?ÿ

Sorry I misread. I thought that you were moving it from one setup to another without switching off or disconnecting.
You can move the telescope by hand. The motors of the S3 are different to the other Trimble instruments. They are a bit slow and noisy by comparison.

I think when reflectorless (DR mode) is selected Autolock is off automatically. I mean it gives you no choice?
It would be nice if a tech or rep of the Big 2 (or 3 or 5) stepped in here and clarified whether their robotic instruments can/should be rotated without using the (servo/piezo/mag) drives. I've never done it, but have occasionally bumped a robot and done it, but when I took a yellow 5600 into a service center to be re-batteried and the rep shucked it out of the case and plonked it on the counter and put his huge paw on top of it and spun it like a top, 99% of me wanted to jump that counter and scratch him.
Ironically, being a non yellow shop, he accepted the battery challenge, but not 200m down the road from departure I got a call from him saying they couldn't do it and to come back and collect it. Which I did, and 50% of me wanted to give him a kiss for being honest, while the other 50% wanted to give him a Glaswegian Kiss.

I know what you mean!!?ÿ I was under the impression it wasn't a good idea to spin any robotic gun without turning it on first.?ÿ However, my service tech grabbed it one day as he put it on his bench and cranked on it! Slapping him seemed like an appropriate response, but instead,?ÿI asked him if it was safe to do that and he said it doesn't have any affect on it.?ÿ I have a Topcon PS103, BTW. So, I trusted him and it doesn't seem to affect it in the long run.?ÿ As far as the loud noise goes, I agree with Rob.ATM that it could just be the internal mechanics of the reflectorless laser.?ÿ I know that as soon as I turn on the laser on my Topcon, it sounds like a caveman rubbing rocks together trying to start a fire!
