I posted the link yesterday, glad you enjoyed it. There is another story of a survey crew in NW Kansas that went out unarmed after the army failed to deliver weapons. I believe this was in the area of Beaver Creek or the Middle Fork of the Sappa near Oberlin, KS. I grew up near there in Colby, KS so I am familiar with the area.
The crew was never heard of again and Indian reports were the crew fought but were wiped out. Reportedly one crew member had a gun and attacked a party of Indians, which started things off.
I will post more if I can find the article.
By the way the Museum in Meade, KS has a small display of some of the articles from the Lone Tree Massacre; an arrow, a towel or linen article, and a report of the fight. Pretty decent museum.

Did this happen at the same time as in this link?

BTW, Mrs. Cow lived and worked in Oberlin for a year or so after college. Spent most of her first 18 years in Cheyenne County. Speaking of Colby, that's one humongous barn. Would hate to have to stack hay all the way to the top.
Oberlin-area Massacre
I believe it was. I was reading a bunch of stuff while in Montana at the Custer Battlefield this summer. The article will come to mind and I will post it.
The Cheyenne defeated Lewis just north of Scott City, KS near Cuartellejo Pueblo ruins. The rifle pits the Cheyennes dug are still visible and the cave at the headcut where the women and children hid is still there. The Cheyenne dog soldiers fought a rear guard action as the Indians retreated all the way from OK to Scott City, KS.
The cavalry came over from Fort Wallace to attack from the west. The commander was wounded and I believe was removed by ambulance and died at Fort Wallace.
Great cemetery at Fort Wallace and a good museum at Wallace, KS near the old fort site.

That barn was moved from a location between Gem and Rexford, I think. I remember seeing it several times as a child and walking through it once at the original location. Foster Farms had several farm sites in that area in the 30's and 40's, where their employees worked out of.
By the way ask Mrs. Cow if she was ever at the Rusty Bucket in Colby. People still talk about that place.
Oberlin-area Massacre
She proclaims innocence relative to the Rusty Bucket. She didn't get properly corrupted until she met me. At least, that's what she tells me.
Oberlin-area Massacre
Everybody in NW Kansas been to the Bucket. Best times were when Jimmy Dee and the Fabulous Destinations played there. Only table top room to stand on. Jimmy Dee still plays in Central KS.
