We found 2 of these monuments recently while working on different boundary surveys. ?ÿDoes anyone have any information about this survey or where I can get some information? ?ÿFrom what I have been able to find:

This survey was commissioned by the federal government, and?ÿI am pretty sure it was completed for the design of the Illinois River Lock and Dam system. ?ÿI am interested in the survey because I believe this survey probably located Section Corners that have been lost due to the construction of the lock and dam system. ?ÿI have emailed the state archives but they said they did not have any information. ?ÿ

Both of these monuments were located on top of the river bluff. ?ÿI know one is listed with NGS not sure about the other one.

I believe these are the points "Lacon" on Sheet 8 and "Vermillion River" on Sheet 9.

See maps here: https://digital.library.illinois.edu/items/8b187b30-d675-0137-6f52-02d0d7bfd6e4-e

Great map!   Love that area, especially matthiessen State Park.   We hike there a lot.

Off topic, but I am very impressed with the stamping...it must have been done on a machine...

They set the pipe made measurements, then set a brass cap? No way someone could field stamp that, right?

@dmyhill  I was wondering about that too!   Better than any I've ever stamped, by far.

I found this on the Mississippi River bluff a few years ago.  My understanding is it was early geodetic work.  This had updated coordinates on the NGS website but they didn’t check great.
