This is what a tractor PTO stub shaft looks like.?ÿ Notice how the last inch and a half look much like what is shown in your photo.?ÿ Stub shafts used in gear boxes on items such as rotary mowers are of similar design.?ÿ Dig down a bit further to see if there is the clamping groove shown in the photo below.?ÿ With only six splines it is for something that transmits much power.

@holy-cow we are already 4' deep to get to the top of these. I think that describing them in my field notes and on my plat as a 6 tooth spindle shaft leaves very little doubt as to what we found for client or the next surveyor.
