In January of 2014 the Fundamentals of Engineering and Surveying Exams will be computer based only. They will no longer be given once in April and once in October. They will no longer be 8 hours long.
You will schedule an appointment at a Pearson VUE testing center during 4 test windows, Jan-Feb/Apr-May/Jul-Aug/Oct-Nov. You may schedule the exam once a period in 3 out of 4 periods in a year. Your appointment is 6 hours long, which includes a test tutorial, testing and breaks. You will know if you pass or failed 48 hours later. You may take an approved calulator but reference material is in the computer. In some jurisdictions you can schedule the test without Board approval and apply for it later.
State boards have already approved the switch of PE and PS exams to computer format. Don't expect that too soon. NCEES has 25 different PE exams in 17 disciplines and the PS exam will most likely be last. As a note 25,000 engineers take the PE exam in a year and 1,200 take the PS exam.
I have never heard of or seen a Pearson VUE testing center, but assume it is similar to Sylvan Learning Centers. A Google search brought up nothing local.

Paul,
The Pearson centers are probably what you think, as I have never been in a Sylvan Center.
My wife took her A+ Certification Exam at a Pearson Center, and she went into a room with a computer, and nothing else if I remember correctly.
This format may be more convenient for some.
I'm glad most of my testing days are over.

They are one of the testing centers that FINRA used for their exams. I took the exams for my stockbroker and futures/commodities trader licenses there.
