Gunter?

I struggled with idea of responding to this comment, but couldn’t refrain. Gunter you seemed to be a liberal and lean politically left. You and I would not have very much in common other than surveying. But I respect your opinions because you have always remained consistent and seem to be intelligent and thought provoking. However, when discussing welfare you had no problem calling out Mormons as abusers of the system. This seems contradictory to what I have seen from you in the past. I am sure you abhor racial, ethnic and sexist bias and prejudices; and yet this comment indicates you have no problem with religious stereotyping. How do you justify that? I am genuinely curious.

Dave

I saw a thing on MTV some years back where ODB (the rapper old dirty b__tard) of I think the Wu Tang Clan, picked up his check from the record company for several hundred thousand dollars then took the camera crew to get his food stamps and welfare check and bragged about how the system was so easy to take advantage of along with some other racial things that get me riled up.

There ya go

FWIW, EMIT 5 panel cups run about 11 bucks a pop, when you buy them in bulk I think they run around 9. The last invoice I have for 10 panel split sample cups were at 26 bucks per unit for a 48 cup case.

If they charge 20 bucks for them, factoring in labor and transportation as big brother is wont to do, I'd be surprised. Alabama currently charges 25 bucks for paroled inmates when they meet with their parole officers, and those are non refundable.

Gunter?

That phenomenon was given out as an example only, not intending to generically single Mormons out, nor to make any specific commentary on their faith - I was pointing out that instances of systemic welfare fraud are well documented within some groups like FLDS, where for example Tom Green's polygamous family was shown to have fraudulently received over $600,000 in benefits.

Regulation of those likely didn't come out of a pure vacuum, or some gubmint official wanting to butt into peoples business.

They probably came about because of problems.

Like maybe a dipstick interior designer not applying common sense and hanging highly flammable drapes with a hot halogen lamp nearby to illuminate them, catching the house on fire.

Like maybe a dipstick hairdresser not paying attention to the chemicals for somebody's perm and leaving some lady with a burned, hairless scalp.

People are idiots. They don't think about these things, and screw up. Things like that happen across many parts of industry. And, that's how we end up with regulation.

Regulation is to protect the public. If industry wants to be deregulated, yet where's the assurance that the public is protected?

Gunter?

Can you name any other groups that have been identified as abusers of the welfare system?

Well, not really classified as welfare, but could be argued as such. Take a look at farm subsidies. I'm not saying all farmers receive generous amounts of subsidies, but quite a few do. I know of one farm family that has received $5.5 million. And their equipment is new or next to new with all the options, such as chrome wheels, lug nuts etc..

Sure, there have been plenty of groups who have worked together in collusion to figure out how to game the system, for example people working as cashiers who are in on the scam working with their confederates on the outside, who allow non-eligible purchases to be made. There have been numerous sweeps in various municipalities, which have often nailed groups who were working together to commit welfare fraud.
