This looks like something that will get expensive in fairly short order.

May I recommend a roof mount magnet.

I see, said the blind carpenter as he picked up his hammer and saw.:-D

That is nice and simple, but I need to grab the rod, take a few shots then run down the road a bit to do it again.

DIY Rod Truck Mount - w/rod, No magnets

Good ideas here, but some are missing the point. I do not want the GPS mounted on the truck to take shots. Yes, a magnet mount would do that. I want the GPS on the rod with the Bi-pod, easily accessible. I cannot park the truck over a section corner accurately enough to take a shot. 😉
I am trying to find an alternative to sliding the rod, bi-pod and receiver into the empty tri-pod hole in the back of the truck. To do that requires opening the back, removing the DC and it looses lock and even radio to the base. Big waste of time.
Plus, none of those I have seen, hold the bi-pod legs.

Rod Truck Mount

> we have a Seco magnetic roof mount - works well;

I have had a GPS receiver on a mag mount shake loose from the roof of the truck on a rough driving surface. I'd rather have a shock absorber in there somewhere.

DIY Rod Truck Mount - w/rod, w/bipod, No magnets, AND front

I always wanted a front mount, where I could watch the thing, make sure I wasn't driving it into a tree, etc.

I have seen one of these, but the company making them doesn't exist anymore...anyone out there know if anyone is making a front mount holder?

That would also work great for a receiver on the front of a truck.
:good:

DIY Rod Truck Mount - w/rod, w/bipod, No magnets, AND front

I've got a similar deal on my quad that holds the entire rod system. I've never been brave enough to put something like that on my truck though. It would break and I'd either run it over or the guy behind me would. Not to mention bumps.

I use the 200' rule. If the point is less than 200' away, I just walk there. If more, then the R8 rover goes on the roof with my quick release mag mount, rod in back, DC on dashboard. Between unhooking everything, then hooking it back up it is maybe 30 plus seconds. To walk to front of truck (or side) to secure it, drive up, unsecure it for shot is likely 20 seconds.

For 10 seconds a shot, I'll use the mag mount.

Now when it comes to the prism end of my robot, that's kind of a PIA no matter what. I just walk.

Ahh I see. We just have a two piece pole that can break down into 1m sections and then go across the back seat.
